Beware of Dryer Fire

Maintaining the safety of your clothes dryer takes more than cleaning out the lint trap after each load of laundry.

Birds, rodents or insects sometimes enter from the outside exhaust portal; their nests along with lint then build up in the vent. An obstruction can cause drying time to increase and overheating to occur. This increases energy consumption because the machine has to run longer to dry the clothes and can also cause fires in the dryer or the dryer duct. If yours is a gas dryer, there is the additional risk from blockage or improper venting with carbon monoxide seeping back in to the home.

To improve the safety and efficiency of your clothes dryer:

Regularly vacuum the dust and lint around, under and behind the dryer. If moving the appliance, unplug it first.

Occasionally clean the dryer vent, dryer blower and outside exhaust portal of accumulated lint and debris.
Clean the lint trap after each use.

Some dryer vents are relatively short and straight and can be cleaned easily by the do-it-yourselfer. However, a long length or inaccessible run of duct may require the use of special tools and equipment and should be performed by a duct or vent cleaning professional.
