Be Prepared for Emergency Evacuations

If authorities ordered an immediate evacuation, would you and your employees know what to do? The American Red Cross offers several suggestions that are appropriate home-and business-owners alike, such as keeping a battery-powered radio so you can listen to local emergency officials’ instructions.

You should also have a disaster supply kit ready for emergencies and lock your doors and windows before leaving. Shut off water, gas and electricity before evacuating only if you are instructed to do so, have time or suspect the lines are damaged. Follow officials’ instructions about travel routes when you depart.

Your employees will cope better with emergency evacuations if you prepare them in advance. Check out safety tips outlined on the American Red Cross Web site, www.redcross.org. While suggestions are written for a family or neighborhood to follow, many of the tips apply to business owners.
